Reflecting on My Mock Interview

  • How do you feel the interview went overall?
    • Overall, I feel as if I did well for where I am in the process.  I got feedback that my shirt wasn't appropriate which was surprising but I appreciated the feedback rather than not knowing.  She said that I should cover my shoulders and my shirt initially wasn't low cut but rode down at one point.  Will never wear that one again!
  • How did you prepare for the interview?
    • I brainstormed potential questions that I could face and tried to think of answers that would apply to multiple questions.  I also read a tip online to try to think of 2-3 minute answers that could answer a potential future question.  For example, when she asked me to describe myself, I included how I was introduced to OT and why I chose the field.
  • What went differently than you expected?
    • I was not expected to describe my own personal aspirations aside from graduation and a career.  I am glad I was caught off guard by this because in the future, I will be more prepared for such a question.  I feel as though I adapted well to the question, all things considered.  The feedback was also different than expected.  I wished for a little more constructive criticisms on my answers but that's okay.  I can reflect on how I'd better answer some of the questions after watching my video more.
  • What's something you would change if you could go through this process again (or something you'll do differently when you're in a real-life interview situation)?
    • I would say my first and last name in the initial introduction, rather than just my first.  I would also make myself sit up straight because in the video, my posture became more slumped which could reflect my confidence.  In a real interview, I also want to have a lot of knowledge about the facility and be better equipped to ask questions, i.e. about benefits.
  • What's something you learned during this process that may be helpful to you as you prepare to enter the workforce as an OT practitioner?
    • I learned that my personality came across in even a short encounter so that made me feel good.  I think we all leave an interview wondering if that was conveyed and if so, appropriately.  I learned how to think on the spot in a professional setting about me as an OT and what I want as a professional.  Lastly, I became a little more comfortable with "tooting my own horn" for the purpose of getting a job.  Typically, that is uncomfortable for me, but I think I conveyed what I have to offer in a better way than usual.  I'm still thinking about my "superpower," so please share if you can think of my unique characteristic!
